Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the United States. She has worked as an editor since the year 1995. Feminist Frequency is a site which hosts video and commentary looking at the portrayals of female characters in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, critic of the media and a prestigious feminist for more than 10 years. She is the creator and director-general of Feminist Frequency which is an education non-profit website which explores representations of women in pop stories of culture. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they are portrayed in popular culture. In addition she aims to create awareness about online harassment targeted towards women as well as marginalized groups of people. Sarkeesian, who has a Master's in Political and Social Thinking from York University, is a sought after public speaking. She has spoken at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. She was fascinated by feminist issues, gender and gender equality at a young time. When she graduated in 2009, in university she launched the Feminist Frequency website. The ebullient young woman was slammed on the internet for her website that focused on the gender of videogames. This attack didn't stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her resolve as an activist for women in media. Her many notable contributions in the feminist field are recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award award-winning media critic. She also serves as the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit group that focuses on pop-culture depictions of women.
